UFC 131 Results & Review – Dos Santos A Legit Threat To Velasquez

nullJunior dos Santos was the No. 1 contender to the UFC heavyweight title coming into UFC 131, and he is still the No. 1 contender after UFC 131.

The 26-year-old heavyweight improved to 13-1 with a unanimous decision victory over Shane Carwin on Saturday, dominating the entire fight. Dos Santos’ reach proved to be a big factor as Carwin struggled to get inside Junior and dos Santos also showed impressive takedown defense to keep the fight standing.

In the first round, Carwin was nearly finished (and I personally would have stopped the fight) as he took a barrage of strikes from Junior that left him a bloody mess, but he managed to survive and last all 15 minutes.

Dos Santos looked as good as I have ever seen him and he appears to be a legit threat to UFC heavyweight champ, Cain Velasquez.

The co-main event saw Kenny Florian successfully make his featherweight debut by beating Diego Nunes by unanimous decision. Florian lost the first round on two scorecards but bounced back by controlling a tired Nunes for the final 10 minutes.

The other big win of the night came for Mark Munoz, who won a close decision over Demian Maia. All three rounds were competitive and close, but all judges scored the bout for the wrestler, Munoz. Maia showed impressive striking in the first round while Munoz controlled the fight with his wrestling in the final two rounds.

UFC 131 Weigh-In Results: All Fighters On Target

nullThe biggest heavyweight clash since Lesnar vs. Velasquez is official.

Both Junior dos Santos and Shane Carwin stepped on the scales for UFC 131 weigh ins on Friday and Carwin came in at 245 pounds while dos Santos weighed in at 239.

Carwin looked healthy after nearly a year away from competition due to back surgery while dos Santos looked solid and trim, as he is somewhat of a lighter heavyweight.

The big question at the weigh in was how Kenny Florian would look as he makes his 145-pound debut. Florian came in at 146 pounds and is official to take on Diego Nunes, who weighed in at 145 pounds.

All future UFC main events to be 5 round fights

nullLost in the mix of another busy UFC PPV weekend is the fact that UFC President, Dana White, has stated that future UFC main event bouts, even if non-title, will be five round fights.

MMAMania.com has more of the details.

Dana White announced today (via Brett OKamoto of ESPN) that all main event non-title fights will be five rounds instead of three.

There is no word just yet on when exactly the switch will take effect, although it was noted that the upcoming UFC 133 bout pitting Rashad Evans vs. Phil Davis will still be a three-round fight because contracts have already been signed.

The first event after that one will be UFC on Versus 5 on Aug. 14, which features a main event of Chris Lytle vs. Dan Hardy. Who wouldn’t mind adding a couple rounds to that scrap?

It is unclear as to when this will begin as White mentioned that any fights that have a contract already signed can’t be changed.

It was also unclear as to whether the co-main events will also be considered five round fights.

Either way, it should make more some more definitive results in the biggest fights of each card.

UFC Ultimate Fighter Finale Recap: 2011 hates Anthony Pettis

nullIf 2010 was the year of Anthony Pettis, 2011 is certainly doing all it can to be the opposite.

It all started with the end of 2010 where Pettis won the WEC lightweight championship over Ben Henderson and was told he would be the No. 1 contender for the UFC belt.

Well, on the very first day of 2011, Pettis watched Gray Maynard and Frankie Edgar fight to a draw and his title shot was pushed back.

Then, even though Dana White said Pettis would still be next in line for a title shot after Edgar-Maynard III, both fighters got injured for a planned title fight and Pettis was then told he would have to win twice in the UFC to get the title shot.

Then, Saturday happened.

Pettis made his UFC debut against Clay Guida and Guida was able to use his wrestling to keep Pettis on his back for most of the fight, giving Guida the unanimous decision victory.

Pettis showed some solid strikes and an active guard, but he couldn’t lock in a submission or hit a big strike to end the fight.

The loss certainly set Pettis back and he will now need a strong run to ever earn a title shot. Guida will now move into the top 5 discussion for UFC contenders.

The other featured bout of the night was the championship of The Ultimate Fighter Season 13 where Tony Ferguson defeated Ramsey Nijem by knockout in the first round.

Ferguson showed strong wrestling and absorbed a few flurries from Nijem before landing a big left hand that put out the lights of Nijem.

Ultimate Fighter Finale Weigh-In Results

nullWeigh-ins for Saturday’s Ultimate Fighter Season 13 Finale took place on Friday night and all of Saturday’s competitors hit their marks.

The main event is a lightweight clash between Clay Guida and Anthony Pettis. Both contestants weighed in at exactly 155 pounds. This bout will be intense and action packed. Guida will look to control the fight on the ground while Pettis will look to use his tremendous striking to keep the fight standing and earn a KO.

In the Ultimate Fighter Championship, Ramsey Nijem and Tony Ferguson both came in at the 170-pound welterweight limit. Nijem is considered a slight favorite going into this bout, but Ferguson has big punching power and can end the fight in a flash.
