      Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Daley weigh-in results

      nullThe two title fights for Saturday’s Strikeforce card are now official as all four competitors weighed in on Friday night.

      In the main event, Strikeforce welterweight champion Nick Diaz (169.75 pounds) and contender Paul Daley (169.5) both weighed in under the 170-pound limit. Following their weigh ins, the two had an intense face-to-face stare down and had to be separated by officials as they yelled back-and-forth at each other.

      In the co-main event, Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez (154.75) and challenger Tatsuya Kawajiri (154.25) also weighed in under their 155-pound limit, making their championship fight official.

      The main card also features a light heavyweight clash between Keith Jardine and Gegard Mousasi while Shinya Aoki takes on Lyle Beerbohm in a lightweight contest.

      The main card will air live on Showtime starting at 10PM ET.

      Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Daley Odds

      nullThis weekend’s big MMA event is Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Daley from San Diego where two Strikeforce titles will be on the line.

      Oddsmakers have released their odds for these title fights. Here is a look at what Bodog’s Sportsbook has to say about Saturday night.

      In the Strikeforce Welterweight Championship bout, champion Nick Diaz is a favorite at -225 while Daley comes in with a betting line of +185.

      It’s not surprising that Diaz is the favorite but I am a little surprised that Daley is as little an underdog as he is. Daley has a clear weakness in his grappling and he is facing one of the best submission fighters in the world in Diaz.

      Diaz can be stubborn with his stand up, but he is still a smart fighter and I would expect him to dispose of Daley on Saturday.

      In the Strikeforce Lightweight Championship, the title holder Gilbert Melendez is a favorite at -265 against challenger Tatsuya Kawajiri, who has a betting line of +205.

      Melendez already holds a decision victory over Kawajiri back in December of 2006 and it seems as if Melendez is an even better fighter now. Kawajiri also recently lost to Shinya Aoki, who Melendez dominated in his last fight a year ago.

      I hate to go with the favorites all the time, but I like the champion to retain here as well. Diaz and Melendez, who happen to be teammates, seem to clearly be better than anyone in their divisions and I don’t see them losing their titles any time soon.

      Bellator fighters still competing for national respect

      nullWith all the media buzz over Zuffa’s purchase of Strikeforce last month, many media pundits were left to wonder what competition was left for the premiere company in MMA—the UFC.

      Cleary Zuffa owns the two most notable promotions, but there are still plenty of other organizations that are trying to establish MMA stars.

      One of those promotions is Bellator, which will be hosting another card tonight featuring a lightweight championship bout with Eddie Alvarez defending his title against Pat Curran. The show will air live on MTV2 at 9 p.m.

      Alvarez is 21-2 in his MMA career with 19 stoppage wins. Some feel he is earning his spot in the top 10 of the lightweight rankings, but as Alvarez told Sherdog.com’s Mike Whitman, rankings are “nonsense”

      “I understand that in order to get in the rankings, you have to first gain popularity. And I’ve been saying this over and over. There are going to be guys in the next couple of years from Bellator who are going to be ranked in the top-10, and that’s not necessarily because they are better than the UFC guys,” said Alvarez during Wednesday’s media conference call.

      “[The rankings] are very subjective and very political. I think it’s more of a popularity contest than a talent contest. Rankings, to me, are just a way to negotiate my money with a promotion. Other than that, they hold no bearing. It’s all nonsense. A No. 1 guy can lose to a No. 10 guy any day of the week.”

      Looking at his career, Alvarez does hold recent wins over former UFC contenders Roger Huerta and Josh Neer, but he also has suffered losses to Shinya Aoki and Nick Thompson.

      A lot of times we like to look at a guy’s record and deem him a certain caliber, but that won’t satisfy my eye test.
