UFC 130 Weigh-In Results: All fighters make weight

nullAll 20 competitors that will be taking part in Saturday’s UFC 130 successfully weighed in on Friday.

Main-event light heavyweights Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and Matt Hamill both hit the 205-pound limit on the dot and then had an intense stare down to hype up the live crowd. Jackson is likely fighting for a title shot against Jon Jones with a win while Hamill is seeking the biggest win in his pro career.

In the co-main event, heavyweights Frank Mir and Roy Nelson came in at 260 pounds. Nelson adorned some lovely pigtails with pink ribbons while Mir looked to be all business.

Thiago Alves, who has had a history of missing weight, looked healthy in his 170-pound weigh-in. He will face off with Rick Story, who also weighed in at 170 pounds. Alves is looking to get back into the UFC welterweight title picture while Story is seeking the biggest win in his young career.

UFC 130 Preview: Rampage Jackson vs. Matt Hamill

nullIn the main event of Saturday’s UFC 130, Quinton “Rampage” Jackson squares off with Matt “The Hammer” Hamill.

A win for Rampage is expected to put him in line for a title shot while a win for Hamill will thrust him into the top contender discussion.

Here is a look what each fighter brings to the cage:

Quinton “Rampage” Jackson (31-8) – Rampage is still one of the most intimidating fighters in all of MMA. His powerful hands are still amongst the best in the division and he always is a threat for a one-punch knockout. Jackson has under-rated grappling skills, but he has been susceptible to the takedown recently. Where Jackson struggles is against opponents that have diverse striking, mainly leg kicks, and have explosive takedowns. Jackson can win this fight by keeping it standing and out-striking Hamill.

Matt Hamill (10-2) – Hamill has quietly worked his way up the light heavyweight division. He is on a five-fight win streak with decision wins over Tito Ortiz and Keith Jardine in his last two bouts. Hamill is primarily a wrestler, but he has improved his striking over the last few years and shows good movement when on his feet. It will be tough for Jackson to land a clean shot on Hamill if he continues to use the footwork he has in recent bouts. Where Hamill needs to take this fight is to the ground, where he can control Rampage and earn a decision. I don’t look for Hamill to earn a KO or a submission, but I think he has a better chance of winning than many think.

Who Will Win: I think this will really be a competitive fight and really test both fighter’s will. I expect Jackson to have to fight off his back during periods of this fight and I also expect Hamill to have to recover from a stiff punch from Jackson. Ultimately, I think Hamill will be a little too cautious in his first PPV main event bout, and that will cost him a decision in the long run to the more aggressive Jackson.

Early Betting Odds for UFC 130: Rampage, Mir favored

nullThis Saturday, UFC 130 takes place from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas and Bodog.com has released its odds for the five main card bouts.

In the main event, Quinton “Rampage” Jackson (31-8) takes on Matt Hamill (10-2) in a light heavyweight contest. This was originally scheduled to be the co-main event, but injuries to both Gray Maynard and Frankie Edgar cancelled the planned lightweight title fight.

Jackson comes into the bout as the clear favorite with a money line of -275 while Hamill comes in at +215. Jackson is a former champion and powerful striker while Hamill is more wrestling based and likes to use his long reach to keep from getting into a slugfest. Hamill has won his last five bouts while Jackson has won three of his last four. The winner is likely to be discussed as one of the top contenders to Jon Jones’ championship.

In the co-main event, heavyweights Frank Mir (14-5) and Roy Nelson (15-5) face off. Mir comes into the bout as the slight favorite with odds of -135 while Nelson has odds of +105. Nelson has not fought since August of last year when he suffered his first loss in the UFC to Junior dos Santos. Mir has alternated wins and losses over his last five bouts but is still considered one of the top fighters in the division. Both men bring powerful hands and solid grappling. Mir may be the better submission fighter but Nelson has better striking in my opinion.

Edgar & Maynard both injured, UFC 130 bout off

nullThe UFC had some pretty sad news to report today.

It appears that both Gray Maynard and Frankie Edgar, the main event fighters for UFC 130, are both injured and had to pull out of the schedule lightweight title fight on May 28.

The highly-anticipated third bout between UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar and number one contender Gray Maynard will have to wait a little longer, as it was announced today that both fighters have suffered injuries in training camp that will take them out of the UFC 130 main event on May 28th.

Stepping up into the UFC 130 main event slot is the bout between former UFC light heavyweight champ Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and Matt “The Hammer” Hamill, and moving to the Pay-Per-View card will be the Thiago Alves vs. Rick Story welterweight showdown.

In Spike TV prelim action, Tim Boetsch’s middleweight debut against Kendall Grove will join the bantamweight fight between Miguel Angel Torres and Demetrious Johnson.

This news only messes up an already messed up situation in the UFC lightweight division. The draw between these two at UFC 125 threw off plans for a title fight for Anthony Pettis and now fighters like Jim Miller and Gilbert Melendez are clamoring for a title shot as well.

UFC 130 is still a pretty solid card from top to bottom, but Rampage vs. Hamill is not an ideal main event these days.
